The BF90's high-performance gear case with a low 2.33:1 gear ratio, coupled with Honda's revolutionary Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST™) creates an explosive hole shot unlike anything ever before seen in four-stroke outboards, while VTEC™ ensures top performance at all levels.
Inspired by the same remarkable 1.5lt, SOHC, 16-valve, inline four-cylinder engine that powers Honda's number one selling motor vehicle, the 'Jazz', the BF90's multi-port Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system delivers top fuel economy in a very lightweight package.
In fact, with the exception of the cylinder sleeves, the engine boasts an all-aluminium alloy block, making the BF90 the lightest weight outboard engine in its class at just 163kg!
Honda's patented non-linear mounting system ensures ultra smooth operation at all speeds, while a patented 35amp alternator provides superior charging capacity.
The patented 4-Front Corrosion Protection also fights off corrosion from harsh marine environments to ensure extended engine life.

Technology
World-renowned Honda four-stroke quality combines proven reliability and superior fuel efficiency, with no oil mixing.
Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™). Utilises mild cam lobes to operate the intake valves at low rpm, then engages a high-output cam lobe at high rpm. This state-of-the art, exclusive design provides a unique blend of power, torque and efficiency at any speed.
Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST™). Advances ignition timing during acceleration, resulting in explosive hole shots.
Engine Command System / Engine Command Module (ECM). Constantly accepts input from a series of different sensors. The system delivers instant starts, smooth operation, strong performance and excellent fuel economy.
Lean Burn Control. Utilises an oxygen (O²) sensor along with the ECM to automatically adjust the air/fuel mix according to speed and load while maximising power throughout the acceleration range and providing greater fuel economy while cruising (2500-4000rpm).
Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI). Delivers precise amounts of air/fuel to each cylinder, resulting in quick starts, instant throttle response and low fuel consumption. PGM-FI employs microprocessor technology to accurately control ignition timing during start-up and across the entire rpm range, providing optimum overall operation.
Torsion Dampener. This is positioned at the base of the powerhead to lower the centre of gravity for more stability, smoother handling and improved hull manoeuvrability.
Patented, non-linear rubber mounts. Provide smoother operation at all engine speeds.
4-Front Corrosion Protection. A patented double-sealed, multi-layer paint process fights off corrosion from harsh marine environments. The base is a Honda aluminium alloy, followed by a double-sealed treatment, an epoxy primer undercoat, and an acrylic resin metallic coating, finished with a clear overcoat of acrylic.

Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC), inline four-cylinder design. Uses a single overhead cam with dual intake valves to deliver an optimal air/fuel mixture for maximum torque and combustion efficiency.
High-performance gear case design. The BF90's hydrodynamically superior gear case features an enlarged bullet and new anti-splash and cavitation plate to reduce drag.
Easy-adjust rocker arms. No multiple shims or trial-and-error adjustments.
Easy maintenance. A top-mounted oil filler and screw-type oil filter make for easy maintenance. A removable tab in the lower cowling allows quick and easy access to the bottom spark plug in the head during servicing.
External cowl latch points. Easy-to-open front and back latches ensure a watertight seal for superior engine protection.
Peace of Mind:
Engine Alert System. Monitors vital engine functions and alerts the operator of any problems via a light, buzzer and rpm reduction.
44amp alternator. Keeps battery banks charged all day, even when running multiple accessories.
Sealed starter motor. Inverted in a sealed chamber to protect the starter bendix drive from the elements.
Stainless steel components.
Top-mounted electronics. The alternator, ignition and other critical components are mounted near the top of the powerhead to ensure all are kept cool and dry.
Voluntary Emission Labelling Scheme (VELS) based on international emission regulations to assist the consumer in making better informed choices when purchasing an outboard engine.
